Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv: what to know before you buy
Neve Tzedek was founded in 1887, twenty-two years before Tel Aviv, by Jewish families who wanted out of crowded, port-side Jaffa. It was the first Jewish neighborhood built outside the old city walls. By the early twentieth century it drew artists and writers, among them S. Y. Agnon, later a Nobel laureate in literature. In 1914 Tel Aviv's first cinema, the Eden, opened here.
After the founding of the state the houses crumbled, and the municipality considered demolishing the neighborhood. In the 1980s the Dellal family of London turned an abandoned schoolhouse into a dance center, the Suzanne Dellal Centre. The Nahum Gutman Museum, at 21 Shimon Rokach Street, occupies the house that held the editorial office of the newspaper Hapoel Hatzair from 1907 to 1914.

Restoration set the character of the place: since the 1990s the renovated houses have held shops, cafés and studios. For French speakers, the Collège Marc Chagall, a French school, has its premises in the neighborhood.
